For the security systems upgrades at Van Nuys Superior Court, design challenges included balancing secure controlled entry and emergency exiting with personnel safety. Security improvements involved upgrades to access control, which included a Chexit system, alarm monitoring systems (ACS), video surveillance, and associated building modifications.

Work included both public and security areas, replacement of existing doors to incorporate security devices, such as numeric keypads or card readers that were integrated into the computer network to log entry and exits, and cameras mounted to monitor activity and security intercoms installed for instant communication.

JDBA coordinated modifications with City and County Fire Departments, and documented the sequence of operation during normal entry and exit, and emergency egress situations.
