Sunset Magazine’s Idea Gardens had been
located near the entrance of the Arboretum for over 40 years. In 1998 the
1 ˝ acre site was leveled to make way for new presentation and meeting areas and
eight small gardens showcasing ornamental grasses, California oak trees,
native succulents and other native drought-resistant vegetation. To
celebrate the 100th anniversary of Sunset Magazine, Arboretum
superintendents and magazine editors collaborated with several local
landscape designers to create an inspirational space for garden lovers to
explore.
JDBA provided architectural design of the Celebration Garden, a public
space where demonstrations of gardening techniques, lectures, concerts,
and even weddings can be held. Several of the structures incorporated
environmentally responsible building materials, such as recycled plastic
and recycled wood pulp. The redwood arbor was constructed from certified
environmentally friendly sources. The project also included water
features, seating, and walkways to connect the various structures and
areas.
